Stachura Nets 100th Career Goal for Women's Lacrosse in Triumph over George Washington

Canisius limited George Washington to one goal in the second half as it posted an 11-6 victory in collegiate women's lacrosse action Sunday at the GW Lacrosse Field in Washington, D.C.

The Golden Griffins opened the season with the victory while the Revolutionaries moved to 1-1 on the young season with the setback.

Graduate student Paige Stachura paced the Griffs' offense with four goals while senior Caroline Netti pitched in a hat trick of her own. Freshman Megan Previdi provided a team-high two assists to pair with her first collegiate goal. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Jill Galanti caused a game-high two turnovers and Stachura picked up three ground balls. Between the pipes, sophomore Jody Chu recorded 10 saves.

Bailey Aaron and Everly Kessler each notched two goals for GW. On the defensive side of the field, Katie Hipp tied Galanti for the game-high in caused turnovers with two. In net, Mia Caro made nine saves.

Senior Maddie Mazur opened the scoring for the Griffs, tallying the team's first goal of the year to take a 1-0 lead with 9:02 left in the first quarter. The Revolutionaries would have an answer as Hailey Bolton found the back of the net with less than a minute left to head to the second frame tied, 1-1.

The Griffs broke the deadlock early in the second quarter with back-to-back tallies as Stachura and Netti both registered their first goals of the season to give Canisius a 3-1 lead with 9:28 left. George Washington responded to the Griffs surge, tallying four of the final six goals of the first half to knot the score at 5-5 heading into the break.

Canisius took control of the contest after the halftime break as it erupted for four goals, highlighted by Netti and Stachura each completing their hat tricks, while holding the Revolutionaries scoreless to enter the final stanza ahead, 9-5.

Canisius continued to maintain control of the game during the final frame, adding in Previdi's first collegiate tally and a fourth marker from Stachura to nix a late George Washington goal and leave the nations capital with a win.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN:
"We had a really slow start but our defense and Chu really kept us in the game in the first half. I think we got over our nerves and played to our strengths in the second half to pull off the win."
