Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Early Defecit Too Much to Overcome for Women's Lacrosse

The host Queens Royals scored five-straight goals in the final 3:50 of the second quarter to pull away from Canisius en route to a 14-10 win over the Golden Griffins in non-conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Dickson Field in Charlotte, N.C.

Queens improved to 2-1 on the year with the win, while the loss dropped the Griffs to 1-1 on the young season.

Graduate student Paige Stachura scored four goals on seven shots and earned three draw control victories in the game for the Blue and Gold, while seniors Caroline Netti and Riley Davis each added two goals, apiece, in the losing effort. Senior Grace Harner scored her first career goal and added an assist for the Blue and Gold, and sophomore Briauanna D'Andrade also recorded her first career goal in the losing effort.

For Queens, Jordan Tandler paced the Royals with four goals and her teammate, Ainsley Thurston, scored three times as well. Kayleen Favreau and Olivia Abe each dished out three assists in the win, as Queens ended the game with a 30-26 advantage in shots despite each squad recording 23 shots on goal.

Queens goalkeeper Caroline Kraemer made 13 saves and registered a ground ball, while Canisius goalie Jody Chu was credited with nine stops and a ground ball.

GAME RECAP
Queens jumped out to an early 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter before the Griffs scored three-straight goals in the span of  3:22 to take a 3-2 lead. The first goal in the surge by the Griffs was an unassisted marker by Stachura. The Royals knotted the game at 3-3 with 1:47 left in the opening frame after Maura O'Donoghue scored her second goal in the game's opening 15:00 of play.

In the second quarter, Queens took a 5-3 lead with a pair of goals 1:41 apart. Canisius answered with the game's next two scores, as D'Andrade cut the Queens' lead to 5-4 with her first career goal at the 9:46 mark of the second quarter. Just 3:04 later, Netti knotted the game at 5-5 with her second goal of the day and her fifth of the season. That, however, would be the Griffs' final goal of the first half, as Queens scored five times before the intermission to take a 10-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the third quarter, Queens stretched its lead to 11-5 before Stachura scored twice in the closing 4:00 of the frame to get the Blue and Gold within four at 11-7. Trailing 13-8 late in the fourth quarter, Davis scored two goals for the Griffs in the span of 1:02 to trim the Royals' lead to 13-10 with 3:57 left on the game clock. But that would be as close as Canisius would come on the day, as Queens junior Karsyn Sadler capped the scoring with her second goal of the season with 53 left to play.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN
"The inconsistency in our play all around made this game difficult for us today. We dug ourselves a hole in the first half and the inconsistent play made the deficit insurmountable."
