Leighton, Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay Team Highlights Day 2 of MAAC Championships

Freshman Evie Leighton took home the first individual medal for Canisius, earning a bronze medal in the 500 free, while the men's 200 freestyle relay broke the fourth program record of the week to highlight the second day of the 2024 MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

After two days of competition, the women's team climbed to fourth place with 140 points in the team standings while the men's team dipped to seventh place with 116 points.

After taking part in two record-breaking relays on day one, Leighton parlayed her success into the 500 free, taking third place with a time of 4:59.19, shattering her previous personal-best time of 5:04.19.

The men's 200 freestyle relay team of Ben Yant, Eric Kim, Toby Mayfield and Alexander Hiltbrand bested the previous record of 1:22.63 by scoring a seventh-place finish of 1:22.60. This is the second record-breaking relay of the week in which Hiltbrand participated.

Other notable times on Thursday included a sixth-place finish in the men's 500 free from freshman Marin de Villard with a personal-best time of 4:31.37.

Junior Brenna McLaughlin took seventh in the 200 IM finals, posting a time of 2:07.76.

Canisius will compete in the third of the MAAC Swimming and Diving Championships Friday with the finals scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
