Women's Lacrosse Concludes Road Trip with Win at Central Michigan

Canisius used a 6-0 run in the first quarter to erase an early deficit and take down Central Michigan, 15-9, in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action Sunday morning at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

The Golden Griffins improved to 2-1 on the young campaign while the Chippewas remained winless as they fell to 0-5.

Graduate student Paige Stachura led the Griffs on both sides of the ball, tallying four points (3g, 1a) while causing a career-high six turnovers and tying her personal bests in both ground balls (5) and draw controls (6). Seniors Caroline Netti and Riley Davis provided scoring depth as each player netted a hat trick for the Griffs. Freshman Maddie Fitzgerald pitched in two goals and also helped out on the defense end with two ground balls and four draw-control wins. In net, sophomore Jody Chu picked up her second win of the season with a six-save effort.

Skye DePrado led Central Michigan with three goals and four points. Jozy Allen won a game-high seven draw controls and caused two turnovers.

Trailing 2-0 early in the first quarter, the Griffs offense found its spark scoring six unanswered goals, highlighted by a pair of tallies from Davis, to close the frame and end the first quarter ahead by four.

The Griffs and Chippewas would each notch one tally in the second quarter, with senior Maddie Mazur representing Canisius' only goal, allowing the Blue and Gold to head to the locker room ahead, 7-3.

The Griffs added to their lead in the third quarter, closing the frame on a 3-1 spurt that featured a pair of tallies from Stachura, to expand their cushion to 12-6 ahead of the fourth quarter.

The Blue and Gold put the game out of reach in the opening stages of the fourth, rattling off three unanswered goals to take its largest lead of the game, 15-6. The Chippewas registered the final three goals of the game to determine the six-goal margin of victory.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN
"We were able to get a dominant road win against a team that was in the NCAA tournament last year. Our grit and determination really helped us take control of the game and I'm proud of how hard we fought. We were able to get a lot of players in off the bench and they came in and really contributed right away for a total team win."

GAME NOTES:
• Sunday served as the first meeting between Canisius and Central Michigan.
• The Griffs are now 5-2 all-time against schools from the Wolverine State. Canisius has also played at least one school from Michigan each season since Allen took helm.
• Stachura now needs nine goals to pass Chelsea Martinez (2006-09) for tenth place on the program's career goals list with 119.
• Senior Avery Penoyer scored her first goal of the 2024 campaign with her tally in the third quarter.
• Netti collected her second hat trick of the season with her performance on Sunday.
• Freshman goalie Olivia Licardi made her Canisius debut, playing the final 9:09 of the contest and making four saves.
• Sunday marked the first instance that Canisius had three separate players record hat tricks since Feb. 19, 2023, at Stetson when four different Griffs recorded a hat trick. Against the Hatters, Skylar McArthur, Kaitlyn Salce, Davis and Stachura each found the back of the net three-or-more times.
• Stachrua is the only player to record at three-or-more goals in all three games this season.
