Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Hobart Tuesday

Anthony Dattellas recorded a game-high six points to pace Hobart in a 13-9 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the Poole Sports Complex in Geneva, N.Y.

Dattellas scored two goals and added four assists to pace the Statesmen (1-2). Will Delano recorded a hat trick while David Peterkin finished with three points on two goals and an assist. Adam Shea and Mike Valent combined to win 20-of-24 draws taken at the face-off X. Jack Faiola and Eihanan Wilson posted a total of seven saves between the pipes for Hobart.

Junior Patrick Mitchell tallied two goals and two assists to lead the Golden Griffins (1-2) attack. Senior Hunter Parucki notched a goal and two assists while redshirt junior Mikey Howe notched two goals. Senior Jackson Webster and freshman Mason Wolford each finished with two points on a goal and an assist. Junior Tommy Kunz ended the contest with a season-high 13 saves.

Hobart opened the contest with six unanswered goals in the opening 15:18 of the contest to take control of the contest early. Alex Rosa tallied two goals during the opening outburst while four Statesmen chipped in one goal apiece.

Mitchell answered back for Canisius, recording consecutive tallies early in the second quarter to get the Griffs on the board and trim the deficit to 6-2.

Hobart responded to Mitchell's markers with three unanswered goals over a four-plus minute span to expand its advantage to 9-2.

Howe halted the Statesmen's surge, notching his first goal of the season with 2:35 to play in the first half to ignite a 5-0 run for the Griffs that lasted until the end of the third quarter and made it a 9-7 contest. Howe also capped the run with his second of the game late in the third quarter while Parucki, Webster and Wolford all found the back of the net for Canisius during the surge.

Hobart snapped a nearly 26-minute scoreless span midway through the fourth quarter as James Greene got on the board to begin a three-goal burst for the Statesmen that spanned just under three minutes and gave Hobart a 12-7 edge with less than six minutes to play.

Senior Keegan Kozack and sophomore Alexis Simard struck a little more than two minutes apart during the later stages of the fourth to pull the Griffs within three, but Delano closed out the scoring with his second of the afternoon to secure the Statesmen's first win of the season.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA
"We had a great final three quarters today, but unfortunately, we put ourselves in a huge hole in the beginning and that was the difference tonight. We've got to be able to learn how to have sustained success after a big win on Saturday and come prepared to compete again, even on a short turnaround."

"Our focus pregame and then as the game gets started has to be better. We've got to make sure that we understand the importance of routines and preparation no matter what the result of the previous game was. We cannot rely upon our previous outing to dictate what our effort is going to be.

"Our defense is continuing to gain experience through games, being able to implement our systems and our game plans and adjusting on the fly in-game as teams adjust to how we're playing and making sure we can adjust to how they're playing. It's a learning curve at this point. But the defense really buckled in during that 26-minute stretch that we held them scoreless, especially on some long possessions by them. The defense played its hearts out. We've got to do a better job of not putting them in a hole by not being able to put the ball in the back of the net in the first quarter.

"Mikey (Howe) is a great example of a young man who's battled injuries early in his career and has never wavered in his commitment to the team. We're happy for him to get a couple here tonight and jump start us there on that run during the second and third quarters. We're going to be the sum of all our parts, and we've got to make sure that we're dialed in, all six guys on the offensive end, flowing back into reverse transition and into the defensive end. It's going to take everybody to come away with a victory every time we get a chance to compete."
