Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls to USC Upstate

USC Upstate put up six runs in the second inning with a three-run triple from centerfielder Daniel Gernon as they cruised to a 10-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate baseball action from Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

Gernon recorded four RBI, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Spartans (3–3) while starting pitcher Mathieu Curtis struck out seven batters and allowed one run across seven innings to earn the win.

Senior first baseman Carlin Dick tallied the lone run for the Golden Griffins (1-2), sending a solo home run over the fence in the top of the fourth inning.

Junior Howie Stuckey and sophomore Mason Cisco also recorded singles in the ballgame, totaling three hits on the day for the Griffs.

Graduate student Andrew Fron (0-1) takes the loss for Canisius, going 1.2 innings with six earned runs allowed in his first appearance of the season. Redshirt junior Justin Guiliano took up the majority of relief work, pitching 4.0 innings while allowing two runs, five hits and striking out one batter.

The Griffs were in a hole early in the ballgame as Fron issued a hit by pitch and two walks consecutively before David Periera single brought in two runs. The bases became loaded again and Gernon cleared them with a triple. He later scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 6-0 in the second inning.

The Spartan bats remained quiet until the seventh, when Jared Sherrod and Jace Rinehart hit back-to-back home runs to extend the lead to 8-1.

Sophomore Sam Staerker allowed two more runs in the eighth inning from an RBI double off the bat of Gernon, who later scored on a sacrifice to bring the game to the final score of 10-1.
