Women’s Lacrosse Defeats Detroit Mercy in Demske Debut

Canisius rattled off nine unanswered goals during a more than 25-minute span midway through the contest on its way to a 14-11 victory over Detroit Mercy in collegiate women's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Graduate student Paige Stachura and seniors Riley Davis and Grace Harner all recorded hat tricks for the Golden Griffins (3-1), who made their 2024 home debut on Saturday. Freshman Megan Previdi notched a goal and dished out a game-high four assists to finish with a season-best five points while senior Jill Galanti recorded four caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Cat Kopchia finished with three goals and two assists for the Titans (0-5). Maddy Camm notched three points on two goals and an assist while Alyssa Jarvis pitched in a pair of tallies. Meredith Leavell made nine saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Canisius raced out to a quick 3-0 lead in the opening 2:28 of the contest before UDM responded with the final five goals of the first quarter to hold a 5-3 edge after one.

The teams exchanged goals during the opening six minutes of the second until consecutive tallies from freshman Mya Zeller during the middle stages of the frame kickstarted the game-changing run that lasted until the later stages of the fourth quarter to give the Griffs a 14-7 advantage.

Harner tallied three goals during the run that lasted 25:31 of game time while Zeller pitched in a pair as a total six different Canisius players recorded a goal during the run.

The Titans attempted to claw back into the contest in the final minutes as Camm and Kopchia combined to register the final four goals of the game, but it was not enough as the Griffs held on to secure the victory.
