Men’s Lacrosse Tripped Up in Double Overtime by Cleveland State

Parker Yearego scored with 42 seconds remaining in double overtime to lift Cleveland State to a 10-9 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Friday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Yeargo was one of three Vikings (2-3) players to record two goals in the contest while Connor Zwagerman (1g, 2a) and Alex Van Voorhis (3a) finished with three points each.  Justin Dalum recorded eight saves in goal for CSU. Evan Moskwa was a perfect 5-for-5 at the face off "X" with four ground balls.

Junior Patrick Mitchell recorded a hat trick and added a pair of assists for a career-high five points to pace the Golden Griffins (2-3) attack. Senior Jackson Webster also recorded three goals while senior Hunter Parucki finished with a goal and an assist.

Junior Tommy Kunz made 13 saves between the pipes for Canisius. Sophomore Micah Hanson went 11-of-21 on face offs and scooped up a game-high eight ground balls to go along with an assist.

Yearego recorded the game-winning goal in the final minute of double overtime on an unassisted effort, driving to the right side of the field before ripping a shot past the left shoulder of Kunz from 10 yards out give the Vikings the victory.

In a back-and-forth contest that saw five ties, four lead changes and neither team lead by more than two goals, Cleveland State jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead before Mitchell and Webster countered for Canisius to tie the game after the first.

Mitchell opened the second-quarter scoring to give the Griffs their first lead of the game, only to see the Vikings counter with a pair of tallies to put the visitors back in front by one.

Senior Jaxon Fridge brought Canisius level for the second time on the afternoon just two minutes after the Vikings go-ahead goal before Webster and Mitchell struck just seven seconds apart with less than two minutes to play before halftime to give Canisius a 6-4 edge at the break.

Two CSU goals sandwiched around senior Keegan Kozack's third of the season trimmed the Canisius advantage to 7-6 heading into the fourth.

The Vikings regained the lead during the opening stages of the fourth notching the first three goals of the frame to take a 9-7 lead with 8:11 to play in regulation.

Parucki and Webster pulled the Griffs back into the contest, combining for a pair of tallies just 1:32 apart during the later stages of the fourth to knot the score at 9-9, sending the game to overtime and setting the stage for Yearego's game winner.
