Men’s Lacrosse Defeated by Marist in High-Scoring Affair

Seven players recorded multiple goals to lead Marist in a 20-16 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

Jake Decay and Sam Bickel each recorded hat tricks to pace a potent Red Foxes attack (4-3, 1-1 MAAC) that established a season high for goals scored. Christian Colantonio added a pair of goals and dished out three assists for a team-high five points while Joshua Balcarel (2g, 2a) and Collin Patrick (1g, 3a) finished with four points each. Noble Smith made 12 saves while Dylan Bedell recorded 20 face-off wins and a game-high eight ground balls.

Freshman Mason Wolford scored four goals and added an assist for a team-high five points to lead the Golden Griffins (2-6, 0-2 MAAC). Junior Patrick Mitchell dished out two goals and added two assists while fellow juniors Kayden Easter (2g, 1a) and Mikey Howe (1g, 2a) notched three points apiece. Junior Tommy Kunz finished with 13 saves between the pipes.

Marist raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening 6:09 of the game before Canisius battled back, scoring four of the next six goals to make it a 6-4 contest at the end of the first quarter.

Michael Cassano's first of the season opened the second-quarter scoring and staked the Red Foxes to a three-goal cushion. The Collins brothers countered for the Griffs, with Devin finding the back of the net first before Dylan struck exactly four minutes later to bring Canisius within one, 7-6.

Marist responded before the break, getting a pair of tallies in the final 64 seconds of the second quarter to extend its margin back to three, 9-6, heading into the halftime break.

Canisius pulled within two goals of the Red Foxes twice during the early stages of the third, only to see a three-goal spurt by Marist give the home team a 14-9 advantage with just over six minutes to play in the third.

The Griffs looked to mount a comeback, striking twice in the final minute of third quarter to make it a three-goal game heading into the fourth.

The teams traded tallies during the opening stages of the fourth quarter before the Red Foxes put the game out of reach, scoring four of the next five goals to take their largest lead of the game, 20-14. Canisius recorded the last two goals of the game to determine the four-goal final margin.

HEAD COACH MARK MIYASHITA'S POSTGAME COMMENTS

"We knew it was going to be a high-scoring affair today; that's kind of been the nature of our series here over the last handful of games with Marist and that proved to be true once again. We've got to find a way to not put ourselves in the hole; down four goals right off the jump in the game and then a couple other times being down four and five goals, makes it too difficult of a hole to jump out of. It was a great fight by the guys today, which is awesome, but we've got to up our mental acuity when it comes to our preparedness and our focus of situational lacrosse.

"It's hopefully the kick start that we needed to unlock in the potential of our offensive group here with 16 goals up on the scoreboard. We got to just continue to the tweak some of the things that made some things tick today, but we got to get better on our man-up unit and be able to capitalize on some goals there too moving forward.

"It goes back to situational awareness and recognizing what is part of the game plan for that day of how we're going to run our different packages and systems here defensively. Unfortunately, we broke down too many times in the areas that we prepared for extensively to play against Marist. But we lost that focus in the moment and it led to goals against us."
