Men’s Lacrosse Toppled by Manhattan on Senior Day

Manhattan outscored Canisius by a 10-1 margin during the second and third quarters on its way to a 12-5 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.
 
Kyle Gucwa scored five goals and added an assist for a game-high six points to lead the Jaspers (2-6, 2-1 MAAC) attack. James Basile pitched in two goals and an assist while Sean Shelko finished with a goal and an assist. Connor Hapward recorded 17 saves between the pipes for Manhattan.
 
TJ Buono tallied two goals and added an assist for the Golden Griffins (2-7, 0-3 MAAC). Senior Keegan Kozack, junior Patrick Mitchell and freshman Jordan Reed also scored for Canisius. Sophomore Micah Hanson won a season-high 16 faceoffs and grabbed 11 ground balls.
 
With the scored tied 2-2 at the start of the second quarter, Gucwa scored the first four goals of the frame and Kevin Jaffe added a fifth to give Manhattan a 7-2 advantage. Buono notched his first of the game with 3:52 left before the break to make it a four-goal game at halftime.
 
The third quarter saw the Jaspers use goals from five different scorers while keeping the Griffs off the scoreboard to build a 12-3 cushion heading into the fourth.
 
Canisius scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter on tallies from Reed and Buono, but Manhattan was able to hold on to secure the road victory.  
 
POSTGAME COMMENTS
GAME NOTES
• Canisius outshot Manhattan by a 36-32 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 23-12 edge during the first and fourth quarters.
• The Jaspers was 1-for-2 in man-up situations while the Griffs were 0-1 in EMO on Saturday.
• Buono recorded three-or-more points in a game for the second time this season as he finished with three points on Saturday.
• Hanson recorded a season-high 16 face-off wins as he posted double-digit wins at the "X" for the fifth time this season.
• Hanson's 11 ground balls were also a season high as he finished with double-digit ground balls for the seventh time in his career.
• Reed's goal in the fourth quarter was the first of his collegiate career.
• Junior goalie Tommy Kunz recorded seven saves in goal for Canisius, the first time he has not reached double digits in saves in a game this season. 
•  The contest served as the program's Senior Day, with the team honoring its Class of 2024 in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius takes to the road Wednesday for a MAAC contest against Siena. Opening faceoff for the contest between the Griffs and Saints is slated for noon at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.
