Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Stumps Robert Morris for Sixth Straight Win

Canisius found offensive support from seven different goal scorers while its defense limited Robert Morris to just 19 shots to secure an 8-7 win over Robert Morris in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.

The Golden Griffins improved their record to 7-1 with their sixth straight win while the Colonials fell to 1-8 on the year.

Senior Riley Davis led the Griffs with two goals while sophomore Meg Hiltz and freshman Megan Previdi each tallied an assist. On the defensive side of the ball, senior Meghan Ellis secured a career-high six ground balls and caused a team-high two turnovers. Junior Hailey Rooney also assisted on defense, setting a career high in ground balls with three. In net, sophomore Jody Chu made two saves and collected four ground balls.

Jenna Irwin scored a game-high three goals with Lilli Hadden adding in two goals and an assist for three points. Jenna Evans caused a game-high three turnovers and in net, Megan Shepley made 11 saves.

The Colonials struck first thanks to a goal from Jenna Irwin, but the Griffs had an answer as with 1:30 left in the opening stanza, Davis found the back of the net on the man-up situation to tie the game heading to the second quarter.

Davis' goal helped spark the Canisius offense to begin the second quarter with freshman Maddie Fitzgerald burying the ball past Robert Morris' Shepley to make it a 2-1 game less than two minutes into the frame.

The host Colonials equaled the game moments later, but a goal from senior Caroline Netti with less than five minutes in the half sent the visitors into the locker room ahead, 3-2.

Out of the halftime break, the Griffs offense found their groove, scoring three of the four goals tallied in the third stanza, with all three goals coming from a different player, to head to the fourth quarter ahead, 6-3.

Canisius added to its lead at the start of the fourth quarter, using markers from Davis and Tifft to stretch its lead to five. The Colonials attempted to make a comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring four goals during a 4:13 stretch to make it a one-goal contest with just over four minutes to play in regulation.

The Griffs defense made the one-goal lead stand, blocking Colleen Tiffts' attempt for the Colonials with less than two minutes to play, giving Canisius possession of the ball for the rest of the contest to secure the win.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN
"Our defense deserves a lot of the credit for the win today. They really saved us when we were struggling to find the back of the net. Mya Zeller has now proven in multiple games, at critical times, that she can win big draws for us."
