Women's Lacrosse Defeats Quinnipiac for Seventh Consecutive Win

Freshman Maddie Fitzgerald notched her first collegiate hat trick to help pace Canisius in its 10-8 victory over Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Friday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Winners of seven consecutive games, the Golden Griffins improved their record to 8-1 overall and picked up their first conference win of the campaign. The Bobcats moved to 1-7 and 0-1 in MAAC action.

Along with Fitzgerald, senior Caroline Netti added in two goals of her own to help lead the Canisius offense. On the defensive side of the ball, senior captains Jill Galanti and Catherine Wall each collected a game-high four ground balls with Galanti also causing a career-high four turnovers in the win. Senior Maddie Mazur totaled four draw control wins. In net, sophomore Jody Chu stopped eight shots.

Angelina Sparacio led the Bobcats with three goals and three ground balls. EllaGrace Delmond and Abby Wise each nabbed two draw control wins for Quinnipiac. Lindsay Mazzucco caused two turnovers and made 14 saves between the pipes in the losing effort.

Canisius trailed 2-1 midway through the first quarter when the offense found their footing, using four straight goals from four different players to grab a 4-2 early in the second quarter.

Each side added one more goal before the half ended, with Fitzgerald notching her second of the contest, to see the Griffs head to the locker room ahead, 6-3.

The Griffs continued to control play in early stages of the second half, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game, 9-3.

Delmond got the Bobcats on the board for the first time in the second half with 18 seconds left in the third to trim the Griffs lead to five heading into the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats attempted to crawl back into the contest during the final frame, scoring four of the last five goals of the game to pull within two, but a trio of late-game saves from Chu and a Bobcat turnover with less than a minute left allowed the Griffs to walk away with their seventh consecutive victory.
