Strong Fourth Quarter Helps Women's Lacrosse Tame Le Moyne

Canisius kept Le Moyne scoreless in the fourth quarter and added three goals of its own to break a 7-7 deadlock and post a 10-7 victory in intercollegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
The Golden Griffins picked up their third straight win to improve their record to 4-1 while the Dolphins tumbled to 1-4 with their fourth consecutive loss.
 
Senior Caroline Netti paced the Griffs offense with a career-high tying five goals and an assist for a six-point afternoon. Sophomore Meg Hiltz provided additional scoring help with two tallies while freshman Megan Previdi dished out a team-high two assists. Defensively, freshman Maddie Fitzgerald and senior Maddie Mazur each won four draw controls and senior Catherine Wall notched two caused turnovers. Sophomore Jody Chu earned the win in net, making six saves.
 
Grace Detor, sister of Canisius women's lacrosse alumna Samantha Detor, led the Dolphins with three goals while Sarah Hutchings notched three assists. On the defensive side of the ball, Reilly Geer and Paige Crandall each nabbed three ground balls with Crandall also making 10 saves in the loss.
 
Tied entering the fourth quarter, Canisius scored back-to-back goals from Netti and Previdi in the opening two minutes of the frame to build a 9-7 cushion.
 
Hiltz added to the the Griffs lead with 8:21 play in the fourth, finding a pocket of space and sending a ball past Crandall to give Canisius a three-goal cushion with 8:21 left.

The Canisius defense did not waver after the Hiltz tally, holding the Dolphins scoreless to secure the home victory.  
 
Earlier in the contest, the Dolphins controlled the opening quarter, racing out to an early 3-0 lead. The Griffs finally cracked the Le Moyne defense at the start of the second quarter as sophomore Meg Hiltz got Canisius on the board.
 
The Griffs offense did not slow down after Hiltz's lid lifter as it used goals from junior Hailey Rooney and Netti to tie the score at 3-3 with 7:58 left in the half.
 
Each side scored two more times before the halftime buzzer, with Netti and freshman Maddie Fitzgerald representing the Griffs last two tallies of the half, to send the game to halftime tied at 5-5.
 
Neither side was able to gain an edge in the third as both sides scored twice during the frame, leaving the teams tied at 7-7 entering the fourth quarter and setting up the Griffs fourth-quarter surge.

GAME NOTES
• Today marked the first meeting between Canisius and Le Moyne since the 2008 season and 14th overall. The series between the two regional rivals dates back to the Griffs inaugural season in 1998.
• Redshirt sophomore Taylor McArthur made her first career start on Tuesday. The Peterborough, Ontario, native picked up a ground ball during the contest.
• Rooney's free-position goal in the second quarter represented her first goal of the season.
• Previdi provided two-or-more assists for the third consecutive contest and fourth time this season.
• Netti's most recently scored five goals on Feb. 19, 2023 at Little Three rival St. Bonaventure.
• Senior Maddie Mazur tied her career-high in draw controls with four
• Le Moyne committed 22 turnovers compared to 14 for Canisius
• Ellis now sits three ground balls away from 50 for her career.
