Baseball Defeats UNC Greensboro in Series Finale

Canisius plated five runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and record a 7-2 victory over UNC Greensboro in collegiate baseball action Sunday at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

Junior Jackson Strong recorded a 4-for-4 performance in the ballgame, blasting a three-run homer in the sixth, giving the Golden Griffins (3-5) pitching staff a sizable lead to close out the series. The Spartans were unable to complete the series sweep of the Griffs and move to 7-4 on the season

A double away from the cycle, Strong had a massive day at the plate and on the base paths. He reached in all five plate appearances, hitting a triple in the first inning, two singles, a home run and stole a base after drawing a walk in his final plate appearance.

The Sunday starter for the Griffs, sophomore LHP Felix Morin (2-0), had another quality start in his second appearance of the season. He went 5.0 innings of one hit ball, while tying his career high in strikeouts with six.

Both teams were quiet at the plate in the first two frames, as Morin and UNCG starter Rob Ready worked their way through the lineups. Morin struck out four batters in the first two innings.

The Griffs got on the board first, with graduate student Mike DeStefano tallying his first RBI of the season, driving in junior Howie Stuckey. Stuckey reached on a single and advanced into scoring position on an error. The offense tacked on an additional run in the next inning, with Thomas Zwirecki doubling and scoring on a sac fly from junior Cole Sebastian, bringing the fourth inning score to 2-0.

The Spartans responded quickly as Matt Venuto and GC Jarman scored in the bottom half of the fourth, capitalizing on two errors committed in the infield.

The score was tied at 2-all in the sixth when the Griffs hitters retook the lead in commanding fashion. With one out, the Griffs threatened with the bases loaded as Stuckey flared a single into center to drive in two runs. Strong then sent a homer over the UNCG scoreboard to bring the score to 7-3.

Strong manufactured another run in the eighth inning, walking and stealing second to set up junior Trent Rumley for the RBI single, bringing the score to 8-2.

Junior RHP Aaron Duffy came on to relieve Morin in the sixth, working 3.0 innings while allowing one run and one hit. The Spartans added a run in the eighth with Manuto scoring on a wild pitch from Duffy.

Junior Bryan Aduddle closed out the game in the ninth for the Griffs, striking out two batters in the final frame, leaving the score at 8-3.

Game Notes:
•Strong was a double shy of completing a cycle. Sean Jamieson was the last Canisius hitter to complete the cycle, doing so on March 22, 2011 in a 32-17 win over Morehead State
•Strong stole four bases over the weekend bringing his season total up to eight
•Morin tied his career high strikeout total with six today. He last accomplished this in the 2023 MAAC Championships loss to Quinnipiac (May 26)
•Carlin Dick snapped his 13 game on-base streak today, being the only Griff batter to not reach base
•Canisius hitters struck out six times in today's contest, a season low
•Zwirecki made his second start behind the plate, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored. The sophomore is hitting .357 and three of his five total hit this season have been doubles
•Freshman Tyson Kaufman made his first collegiate start at third base. He drew three walks
