Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Downs Marist on the Road

Canisius outscored Marist by a 6-0 margin in the third quarter to rally from a two-goal deficit and post a 10-8 victory in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday  at Tenney Field in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved their record to 10-5 overall and 3-4 in conference action while the Red Foxes stumbled to 3-12 and 2-5 in MAAC play.

Senior Caroline Netti and freshman Maddie Fitzgerald led Canisius with three goals each while freshman Megan Previdi tallied a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. Sophomore Meg Hiltz dished out a career-high three assists. Senior Jill Galanti collected five ground balls and caused a team-high two turnovers. Sophomore Jody Chu made 12 saves for the win.

Kerri Gutenberger paced Marist with a hat trick. Sophia Georgeopolous tallied five ground balls and caused a game-high four turnovers. Megan Morris made eight saves in the losing effort.

The Griffs held a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter courtesy of Previdi and senior Maddie Mazur before Marist rattled off four unanswered goals to grab a 4-2 with 8:07 to play in the second quarter.

Netti halted the Marist run at the 7:28 mark with her first goal of the contest, but two more goals from the Red Foxes sent the hosts into the locker room ahead, 6-4.

The third quarter saw Canisius score three unanswered goals to tie the game, 6-6, and force a Marist timeout. The Red Foxes' timeout did little to slow the Griffs attack as they continued their run with three additional goals, highlighted by Netti and Fitzgerald completing their hat tricks, to head to the fourth quarter ahead, 9-6.

Even with two late goals from Marist in the fourth quarter, Canisius added one more goal at the start of the fourth quarter off a converted free-position shot from junior Hailey Rooney to seal the two-goal win.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN
"(Jody) Chu and our defensive unit were excellent today. The offense was able to put things together in the third quarter to ensure the comeback. I'm happy that we were able to keep our composure and play strong in the second half of the game."
