Niagara Pulls Away in Second Half to Defeat Women’s Lacrosse

Behind eight goals from Andra Savage, Niagara outscored Canisius 8-3 in the second half to erase a one-goal deficit and en route to a 16-12 win in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Purple Eagles improved their record to 13-3 overall and 6-2 in conference action, while the Golden Griffins dropped to 10-6 and 3-5 in MAAC play.

Along with eight goals from Savage, Lois Garlow notched four goals and two assists of her own. Riley Latray added a goal and a game-high five assists for six total points. On defense, Sydney Huhtala collected four ground balls and caused five turnovers, both team-highs. Katie Ling made sevens in net for the win.

Freshman Maddie Fitzgerald paced Canisius with five goals with graduate student Paige Stachura and senior Caroline Netti adding in four and three goals, respectively, in the losing effort. Graduate student Victoria Gottorff notched a season-high two assists as well. Jill Galanti won four ground balls and Stachura had 11 draw controls, one shy of the program single-game record.

Canisius struck early in the first quarter, scoring five of the first six goals of the game, thanks to four tallies from Fitzgerald, to open an 5-1 lead with 6:12 remaining in the first quarter. Niagara answered with four answered goals spanning the end of the first and start of the second quarter to tie the game, 5-5, with 13:01 left before halftime.

The two sides exchanged goals for the remainder of the half, but Stachura's third goal of the evening with 18 seconds left before intermission sent Canisius into the locker room with a 9-8 edge.

Out of the halftime break, Niagara controlled the tempo, scoring three of the first goals of the second half, to retake their lead at 11-10 with 4:45 left in the third stanza. Fitzgerald knotted the game at 12-12 with 2:11 left to play in the third quarter on her fifth goal of the game, but a goal from Niagara's Lexi Braniecki with 29 seconds left in the third proved to be the difference, as the Purple Eagles closed out the game on a 4-0 run over the game's final 15:29 to secure the victory.

GAME NOTES:
Wednesday served as the 33rd all-time meeting between the two long-time rivals. The Blue and Gold still lead the all-time series, 18-15.
