Women's Lacrosse Punches Ticket to Postseason with Win at Rider

Behind a career-high six goals from senior Caroline Netti, Cansius defeated Rider, 16-10, to punch their ticket to the Metro Atlantic Atheltic Conference women's lacrosse postseason Sunday morning at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The Golden Griffins finished the regular season with an overall mark of 11-6 and 4-5 ledger in MAAC action while the Broncs concluded their inaugural season with an 8-9 record and 2-7 record in conference play.

Along with Netti, senior Riley Davis and graduate student Paige Stachura provided two goals each with sophomore Meg Hiltz dished out a career and game-high seven assists in the winning effort. On defense, senior Jill Galanti collected three ground balls while Stachura caused a team-high two turnovers. In net, sophomore Jody Chu picked up the win with a six save effort across 50:02 minutes of action.

Kylee Garcia and Toni Gismondi leading the Broncs offense with three points each. Marybeth Smith paced the defense with three ground balls and caused turnovers. In net, Jaime Kubach made six saves across 42:42 minutes of action in the losing effort.

Down 3-0 midway through the first quarter, the Griffs offense spread their wings as they rattled off six goals to close the frame, with all six goals coming from a different player, to flip the script to their favor and hold a 6-3 lead after one quarter.

The Canisus offense did not slow down in the second as Netti scored all three Griffs goals to record her hat trick and sent the Griffs into the locker room ahead, 9-3. The offense was not the only star of the middle stanza as the Griffs defense allowed four total Rider shots, only one of which reached Chu.

Out of the halftime break, Netti continued to have the hot hand, scoring the Blue and Gold's first goal of the second half. Both sides exchange goals throughout the rest of the frame with Canisius not relinquishing the lead entering the fourth quarter, 12-5.

Rider would attempt to mount a late comeback, scoring three of the final four goals of the contest, but three goals from the Griffs earlier in the fourth quarter helped nix the Broncs' late surge and give the Blue and Gold their third win in four games and clinch a postseason berth.

POSTGAME COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN:
"Great team win with nine players scoring a goal with freshman Lauren Matyka scoring one of the best first college goals you could imagine. We came into this game with a very clear plan to beat them with great off-ball movement and we executed it to perfection. I couldn't be prouder of the way our team played today"

GAME NOTES:
• Today marked the first meeting between Canisius and Rider on the women's lacrosse field.
• Matyka's goal in the fourth quarter represented her first collegiate goal.
• Canisius was nearly perfect on free-position shots, going 3-of-4. Fitzgerald, Matyka and sophomore Maggie Tifft all converted their shots.
• Hiltz's seven assists are two shy of the program record which was set by Lauren Smolensky at Binghamton (Feb. 28, 2017) and are the most assists from a Canisius player in a single game this season.
• Stachura is now one goal away from moving into seventh place with Maria Kotas for career goals with 136.
• Netti now has scored four-or-more goals in a game for the second time this season and seventh time in her career. She is also the first player to score six-or-more goals in a game since Stachura scored six against Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara last season (March 29. 2023).
• Freshman and New Jersey native Olivia Licardi played the final 9:58 of the contest, making two saves while between the pipes.
• Canisius was nearly perfect on clears, going 20-for-21 while Rider went 14-for-17.
