Baseball’s Rally Falls Short at St. Bonaventure

Despite a three-run rally in the top of the seventh, Canisius was unable to surmount an early deficit, taking a 6-5 loss to St. Bonaventure Tuesday in collegiate baseball action at Handler Park in Olean, N.Y.

The Bonnies (14-21) take the season sweep against the Golden Griffins (11-22, 5-7 MAAC) for the first time since the 2005 season when St. Bonaventure defeated Canisius five times that season. This is the first time since 2010 where the Bonnies have won consecutive games against the Griffs.

The Griffs took an early lead after scoring two runs in the first inning. Junior Jackson Strong and graduate Kenny Dodson both reached on singles and were driven in by single from redshirt junior Josh Niles.

In the bottom half of the first, the Bonnies scored a run of their own on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1. They would take the lead in the second after a Paul Vossen single got past the Canisius outfielders, scoring the runner on base and allowing Vossen to score with a little league home run. Morgan Little would add an RBI single this inning to put the score at 4-2.

St. Bonaventure would add to their lead in the fourth inning with a bases loaded walk and RBI single from David Marshall.

Bonnie's starter Kade Walker would hold the Canisius bats in check until the seventh inning. Senior Carlin Dick led off the inning with a double and was driven in by a single off the bat of sophomore Mason Cisco

Junior Howie Stuckey would continue the rally with a double down the right field line, advancing Cisco to third base. Redshirt junior JT Ennen notched a single that scored Cisco, and in an attempt to back-pick Ennen at first base, Stuckey scored on the throw. This cut the lead to one run entering the final frames of the game.

Unfortunately, the Griffs were only able to generate one base runner in the final two innings and took the 6-5 loss.
