Mount St. Mary's Sinks Women's Lacrosse with Second-Half Comeback

Mount St. Mary's scored five of the six goals tallied in the second half to rally from a one-goal deficit and defeat Canisius, 8-5, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Mountaineers improved to 4-7 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play while the Golden Griffins slipped to 8-4 overall and 1-3 in conference action.

Anna Salerno and Mackenzie Furlong led the way for Mount St. Mary's with two goals each, with Furlong also tallying an assist for a team-high three points. Mackey Fick caused a game-high four turnovers while Lizzie Stevenson, Anna Salerno and Christina Haspert each recorded three ground balls. Logan Cook won three draw controls and in net, Ashlyn Watkins made nine saves.

Graduate student Paige Stachura paced the Griffs with her seventh hat trick of the season. Senior Maddie Mazur notched a team-best three draw controls, while on the defensive side of the ball, sophomore Meg Hiltz collected three ground balls and senior defender Catherine Wall tallied a career-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Jody Chu made 10 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Playing in wet and chilly conditions, the Griffs trailed 2-0 midway through the first quarter before rattling off three straight goals to end the frame, highlighted by a pair of tallies from Stachura, to take a one-goal lead into the second quarter.

The teams exchanged single tallies during the second quarter, with Stachura completing her hat trick to account, to send Canisius into the locker room ahead, 4-3.

Mount St. Mary's took control of the game out of the halftime break, keeping Canisius scoreless in the third quarter while tallying three goals of their own to grab a 6-4 lead heading into the final stanza.

Canisius broke its scoreless streak at the 3:02 mark of the fourth quarter with a free-position goal from freshman Maddie Fitzgerald, but two goals from the Mount earlier in the frame nixed the late tally and propelled the visitors to the 8-5 win.
