Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Defeated by Iona on Senior Day

Kira Varada and Emily Stewart paced the Iona offense with nine combined goals as it defeated Canisius, 15-9, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Varada recorded a game-high five goals while Stewart notched four tallies to lead the Gaels (8-3, 4-1 MAAC) attack as they picked up their third straight victory. Micaela FitzPatrick chipped in two goals and two assists while Varada also won a game-high seven draw controls. In net, Lauren Sweeney made 15 saves for the visitors.

Four different Golden Griffins (8-5, 1-4 MAAC) registered two goals apiece, with seniors Maddie Mazur, Caroline Netti and Riley Davis and freshman Maddie Fitzgerald each scoring twice. Freshman Megan Previdi also provided a game-high three assists for the Blue and Gold. Defensively, graduate student Paige Stachura nabbed a season-high five ground balls while senior Jill Galanti collected four draw controls as both senior day honorees also caused a team-high three turnovers. Sophomore goalie Jody Chu made nine saves between the pipes.

Iona took control of the game early in the first quarter, scoring the five final goals of the opening frame to erase an early 1-0 deficit and grab a four-goal advantage.

Mazur broke the Gaels scoring streak with her first of the afternoon 1:57 into the second frame, but a goal from Varada less than a minute later countered the Canisius tally. Neither side found the back of the net for the remainder of the half, allowing the Gaels to head into the locker room ahead, 6-2.
Canisius gained some momentum at the start of the third quarter as it scored two of the first three goals of the second half, courtesy of Davis and Mazur, to cut their deficit to 7-4 with 12:34 left.

Iona regained control of the game moments later, however, using a tally from Stewart just before the 10-minute mark of the third to spark a 7-1 run that lasted more than 15 minutes, giving the Gaels their largest lead of the game, 14-5, with just 10 minutes to play in the fourth.

The Griffs notched four of the last five goals of the game to determine the six-goal margin.
