Bullpen Shines in Baseball’s Win Over Le Moyne

Eight pitchers out of the Canisius bullpen held Le Moyne to three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and three free passes to secure a 4-3 win Tuesday afternoon in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Six of the eight pitchers for the Golden Griffins (14-23, 7-8 MAAC) put up scoreless innings to ensure their first non-conference midweek victory of the season. The Dolphins slid to 15-24 on the season after the loss.

Post game Comments from Head Coach Matt Mazurek and Senior Carlin Dick

A full battery of arms were set to pitch in this midweek game, led by the graduate right hander Andrew Fron who started on the mound for the Griffs. Fron pitched two innings, the longest outing of the game for the Griffs. He completed the first inning without issue, retiring the Dolphins in order.

The Griffs jumped out to 2-0 lead in the first inning as junior Jackson Strong walked and stole second to be driven home by a double from junior Trent Rumley. Rumley was brought in by a scorching double down the right field line from freshman Michael Kelly.

Le Moyne tied the game in the second inning with a two-run blast from Adam Sullivan.

From the third inning onward, each arm out of the bullpen received one inning of work to hold the Dolphin bats at bay. First out of the pen was junior Tyler Greenleaf, who retired the side in order with one strikeout.

Strong retook the lead for the Griffs in the third inning with a solo blast to right center field.

Freshman Austin Kutz again retired the side in order in the bottom of the fourth to preserve the one run lead. Graduate Cole Murray took over in the fifth and despite allowing the tying run, picked up three crucial outs with runners in scoring position.

In the bottom half of the fifth, senior Carlin Dick crushed a solo home run for the go-ahead run, putting the Griffs up 4-3. The homer proved to be the winning run as the bullpen dominated the rest of the game.

The last four pitchers came out of the pen firing, as sophomore Sam Staerker, freshman Thomas Russo, junior Aaron Duffy and junior Bryan Aduddle allowed only three base runners for the remainder of the game.

Russo in the seventh inning struck out the side and Aduddle came on in the ninth to earn the save and guarantee the 4-3 midweek victory for the Griffs.

Game Notes:
•Canisius has previously used eight pitchers in one game this season, the 11-10 midweek road loss to Binghamton on March 26
•Strong recorded his 11th home run of the season and 35th stolen base tying Marshall Toole of Wofford to the NCAA lead in stolen bases
•Dick recorded his 10th home run of the season. Dick has hit more home runs this season than his previous three seasons with Canisius
•Kutz recorded the first strikeout of his collegiate career
•Murray tallied his first win as a Griff and his first collegiate win
•Graduate Kenny Dodson maintained his on-base streak and hitting streak after entering the game in the sixth inning. He has reached base in 12 straight games and holds a nine game hitting streak
