Men and Women Swimming Teams Fall in Season Opener

The Canisius men's and women's Swimming and Diving teams dropped the first meet of the 2023-24 season to Marist on Friday.

On the women's side, Marist defeated the Golden Griffins by a score of 169-125, while the men's team suffered a 196-84 setback to the Red Foxes.

The women's team was led by junior transfer Brenna McLaughlin and freshman Evie Leighton, both of whom walked away with three first place finishes. Leighton took first place in the 100 Freestyle (54.42), 200 free (1:57.00) and the 400 free relay (3:38.09). McLaughlin placed first in the 100 back (1:00.22), 200 back (2:00.61) and 200 IM (2:12.16).

Senior Captain Jordan O'Connor also had a successful day on the pool for the women, finishing second in the 200 medley relay (1:51.52) and first in the 400 free relay alongside Leighton. She also finished second in the 100 back (1:00.40) and third in the 50 free (25.82).

Other notable finishes from the women's team include Mandy Hill's second place finish in the 50 free (25.69) and Reilly King's two second place times in the 500 (5:23.10) and 1000 free (11:05.53).

On the men's side, freshman Marin de Villard had a great showing in his first collegiate meet, placing top-two in all four of his events. He came in first in the 100 (51:30) and 200 back (1:54.90), while taking second in the 200 medley relay (1:35.66) and 400 free relay (3:14.79).

Junior Bronson Benes was the first to touch the wall in the 200 butterfly (1:55.90) and garnered a second place finish in the 100 fly (51.52).

Freshman Elliot Somers took second in the 100 back (53.24) behind Villard, while Sophomore Sam Vidal took second in the 100 breast (58.80).

Up Next:
The Griffs will continue their road schedule on Oct. 21, traveling to the University of Rochester to compete against MAAC rival Siena and UR in tri-meet action at the Speegle-Wilbraham Aquatic Center in Rochester, N.Y.
