Hockey’s Comeback Bid Comes Up Short at Sacred Heart

Sacred Heart raced out to a three-goal lead and held off a comeback attempt from Canisius as it posted a 3-2 victory in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at Martire Family Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.

Marcus Joughin, John Jaworski and TJ Walsh all scored for the Pioneers (6-4-0, 5-2-0 AHA), who completed a sweep of the weekend series with Saturday's victory. Chase Clark recorded 21 saves in goal for SHU to earn his fifth victory of the season.

Freshman Matteo Giampa tallied both goals for the Golden Griffins (1-5-1, 1-1-1 AHA) while senior David Fessenden made 22 saves between the pipes for the visitors.

Joughin opened the scoring with a power-play goal at the 8:39 mark of the first period, burying Braeden Tuck's cross-crease feed for his third goal of the weekend.

Jaworski doubled the Pioneers advantage less than a minute into the middle frame when his shot from the left faceoff circle deflected on its way to the goal and past Fessenden.

Walsh expanded the SHU cushion to 3-0 just past the midway point of the contest, jamming home a loose puck from just off the right post.

Giampa would get the Griffs on the board with a pair of tallies a little more than three minutes apart during the later stages of the second period. His first goal of the game came at the 13:41 mark of the second while Canisius was shorthanded as he entered the zone on the rush and wired a wrist shot over the glove of Clark from the middle of the slot to make it a 3-1 contest.
Giampa struck again with just over three minutes to play in the middle frame as he stuffed home a rebound past the right pad of Clark after senior Randy Hernandez's initial attempt was stopped to pull Canisius within one heading into the third. That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as Clark and the Pioneers held the Griffs off the scoreboard in the third period to secure the one-goal victory.
