Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Tripped Up by Cleveland State

Cleveland State forward Tristian Enaruna posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds and Tae Williams added 14 points and four boards to help lead the host Vikings to a 71-61 victory over Canisius in non-conference men's basketball action Wednesday night at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Cleveland State improved to 3-1 on the year with its third-straight victory, while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-2 on the year with the loss.

Senior Siem Uijtendaal led Canisius with a season-high 16 points to go along with six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Junior Tre Dinkins was good for 11 points, while senior Bryce Okpoh came off the bench to chip in 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Frank Mitchell grabbed a game-high 11 boards before fouling out, as Canisius out-rebounded Cleveland State by a 46-39 count for the game. Sophomore Youri Fritz scored seven points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and a career-high five steals.

GAME RECAP
Cleveland State took a 35-34 lead into the locker room at halftime after a tightly-contested opening 20 minutes that saw neither team lead by more than six points at any time. In the early stages of the second half, Enaruna and Drew Lowder hit back-to-back 3-pointers in the span of 1:14 to stretch the Vikings' lead to 41-34 with 18:30 left to play.

Trailing by six points with 13:56 left to play, Uijtendaal scored five-straight points for the Blue and Gold to make it a one-point game at 48-47 with 12:54 remaining in the contest. From there, Cleveland State scored 10-straight points in the span of 3:57 to push its lead back to 11 at 58-47. In that run, Williams scored four points and Chase Robinson also scored four points, capped by a one-handed dunk. Dinkins ended the Griffs' scoreless drought on Canisius' next possession as he knifed through the lane and scored a bucket to make the score 58-49 in favor of the home team.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get until the closing stages of the contest, as Cleveland State pushed away on the power of an 8-2 run over the next 3:22 to make the score 66-51 with 3:47 showing on the game clock.

The Griffs shot 35.8 percent from the field in the losing cause, and the team made just 4-of-23 chances from 3-point range. Cleveland State shot 44.8 percent from the field and the Vikings ended the night by outscoring the Griffs 38-28 in the paint.

GAME NOTES
• Wednesday was the seventh all-time meeting in this series which dates back to 1971. Cleveland State has now won six-straight over Canisius, dating back to 1986.
• The Griffs' 46 rebounds and 11 steals are season highs for the team in both categories.
• After making 23 3-point field goals in the first two games of the season, the Griffs made just four shots from behind the arc, the fewest for the Blue and Gold since Feb. 23, 2023, when the Griffs made four treys in a home win over Saint Peter's.
• Uijtendaal's 16 points in the losing effort improves his career scoring average to 17 points per game in two career contests in the Wolstein Center.
• Mitchell has now grabbed double-digit rebounds in each of the team's last two outings.
• Sophomore Devean Williams came off the bench and pulled down a career-high seven rebounds in 13:42 of action.
• Fritz's five steals are the most for a Canisius player in a game since former Griff Ahamadou Fofana had six against Siena on March 5, 2022.
• Canisius was without the services of graduate student Joe Jones III, junior Xzavier Long and sophomore Tahj Staveskie, who are all dealing with lower-body injuries.
