Hockey Plays to 3-3 Tie Versus Mercyhurst, Falls in Shootout

Will Margel scored twice in regulation to power a Mercyhurst comeback that saw the Lakers score three unanswered goals to post a 3-3 tie versus Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

After a scoreless overtime, Margel tallied the only goal in the best-of-three shootout to secure the extra point for Mercyhurst (7-4-3, 2-2-3 AHA). Owen Say made 35 saves in goal while
Steven Agriogianis accounted for the third goal in regulation for the visitors.

Sophomore Grant Porter, freshman Matteo Giampa and senior Cody Schiavon all scored for the Golden Griffins (7-4-3, 4-3-3 AHA). Senior David Fessenden made 25 saves between the pipes for the home team.

Trailing 3-0 late in the second period, Margel ignited the Mercyhurst comeback with an even-strength tally with less than two minutes to play in the middle frame, getting behind the Canisius defense before placing a wrist shot over the glove of Fessenden to pull the Lakers within two.

Agrionianis made it a one-goal game just 2:36 into the third, depositing Kyler Head's centering feed past the blocker of Fessenden after Head created a turnover below the Canisius goal line.

Margel tied the game at 3-3 just past the midway point of the third with his second of the evening, firing a slap shot from the top of the circles during a zone entry that snuck under the glove of Fessenden.

The game would head to overtime and after a scoreless 3-on-3 session, headed to a shootout. In the shootout, Margel was the only skater to find the back of the net, beating Fessenden with a backhanded effort to give the Lakers the extra point.

Earlier in the contest, the two teams combined for four goals during the second period after a scoreless first.

Porter opened the scoring less than two minutes into the middle frame when he redirected Cooper Haar's shot from the slot to give the Griffs a 1-0 lead.
Giampa doubled the Canisius cushion to 2-0 with 12:12 elapsed in the second, firing a wrist shot over the glove of Say while the Griffs were on the power play for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Schiavon expanded the margin to 3-0 less than two minutes later when his shot from the right point found its way through traffic and over the glove of Say for his second of the season, setting the stage for Mercyhurst's late-game comeback.
