Baseball Drops Midweek Game to West Virginia

An offensive surge over the first five innings led by shortstop Ellis Garcia's 2-for-4, 2 RBI performance allowed West Virginia to cruise to victory over Canisius 10-3 Wednesday in collegiate baseball action at Wagener Field in Morgantown, W. Va.

The Mountaineers (5-4) took advantage of the Golden Griffin (2-3) mistakes, scoring five unearned runs in the contest, highlighted by a Reed Chumley triple in the third inning which scored two runs.

Senior Carlin Dick and junior Jackson Strong were the main drivers of offense for the Griffs, with Strong reaching base three times, stealing a base and scoring two of three runs for the Griffs. Dick belted his second home run of the season in the second inning, a two run shot that tied the game at 2-all in the second. Dick also walked and stole a base in the contest.

In his first collegiate appearance, freshman Joe LoPinto got the start on the bump for the Griffs going two innings while allowing two hits, five walks and two runs.

The Dick home run tied the ball game 2-2 entering the third as freshman Andrew Malec relieved LoPinto. Malec took the loss in his first collegiate appearance, allowing four runs in two innings (two earned), three hits and striking out a batter.

Redshirt junior Ethan Hennessy came on in the fifth with the score 6-2 in favor of the Mountaineers and allowed three unearned runs to bring the score to 9-2.

Freshman Austin Kutz quieted the West Virginia hitters in the sixth, putting up the first scoreless inning of the ballgame for the Griffs. He allowed a run in his next inning with an RBI single off the bat of Tyler Cox bringing the score to 10-2.

Entering the ninth, a single from Strong, a hit batter and walk loaded the bases as the Griffs attempted to mount a comeback. Strong scored on a wild pitch but the game concluded on the next batter with a score of 10-3.
