Baseball Swept in Doubleheader at UNC Greensboro

The UNC Greensboro offense put up a season-high 18 runs in the second game of a doubleheader, while locking up the Canisius bats in the first game to take 4-1 and 18-12 victories in collegiate baseball action Saturday from the UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.

The Golden Griffins (2-5) were swept in the double header for the first time since last season's losses in the Central Virginia Classic to Richmond and West Virginia (3/4/23). The Spartans improve to 7-3 on their 2024 campaign.

Game 1:
UNC Greensboro took the early lead in the second inning, after Griffs' starting pitcher, junior Peyton Consigli, allowed a two-run homer off the bat of Trey Truitt.

Consigli (1-1) took the loss for the Griffs, allowing a run in the following inning as Jeremy Wolf reached on a single and took second and third on a steal and wild pitch. Wolf scored on a groundout to shortstop.

The Spartans got their final runs in the fourth, with Luke Holland laying down a bunt single to reach and eventually score off a Cam Murphy RBI double, making the score 4-1.

The Griffs answered the Spartans in the fifth, as graduate student Mike DeStefano singled and stole second. Junior Trent Rumley doubled down the third base line to drive in DeStefano for the Griffs lone run of the ball game.

Graduate student Tom Peltier relieved Consigli in the fifth and did not allow a run for the remainder of the game. The lefty went four innings and brought his ERA down to 3.00 while striking out a batter and allowing two hits. The Griffs offense was unable to manufacture any runs and in the final four frames the game ended 4-1.

The Griffs had five hits in the ball game, led by DeStefano, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Rumley went 1-for-3 bringing his average up to .286 and added an RBI to lead the team at six.

Game 2:
The Griffs rebounded from the first game in powerful fashion, putting up six runs in the first inning. DeStefano got the offense rolling with a leadoff single and stolen base, followed by a Jackson Strong single that put runners at the corners. Rumley singled to drive in DeStefano and Carlin Dick scored Strong off an RBI single. Sophomore Thomas Zwirecki loaded the bases with a walk, and Rumley scored when junior Howie Stuckey walked as well. Dick and Zwirecki scored on a wild pitch and error to take an early 6-0 lead.

The Spartans responded with seven unanswered runs over four innings to take the 7-6 lead in the fourth inning. Designated hitter Caleb Cozart led the way for UNCG, driving in three runs, while Cam Murphy scored four runs after getting hit by a pitch twice and drawing a two walks.

Zwirecki retook the lead in the fifth, blasting a two-run single that drove in Strong and Dick, making the score 8-7.

UNC Greensboro offense exploded again, scoring 11 runs in the final four innings.

Down 10 runs in the ninth inning, the Griffs looked to mount a comeback. Freshman Eric Weeks was hit by a pitch followed by a pinch hit walk from junior LHP Tyler Hoover and a walk from Strong to load the bases. Back-to-back RBI singles from Rumley and Dick drove in three runs, cutting the score to 18-11. Junior Cole Sebastian produced a sac fly to score Rumley, but the late rally faltered and the game ended with the score 18-12 in favor of the Spartans.

Game Notes:
•Consigli struck out a career high six batters in the first game of the day. His previous high of five came last season at Marshall (3/11/23)

•Strong stole three bases in the second game while going 2-for-3 with three runs scored. The Griff stole seven bases in total for both games
•DeStefano stole two bases on the day, bringing his career total to 53. He is one stolen base shy of tying the third all-time stolen base leader, Branson Joseph (2006-09). He went 3-for-8 on the day, bringing his average to .357
•The 30 runs scored in the second game were the most runs scored in a Canisius baseball game since April 14, 2022, when the Griffs took and 18-17 loss to Marist in Buffalo
