Baseball Splits Double Header to Win Series at George Washington

Senior Carlin Dick and Graduate Mike DeStefano tallied two solo home runs apiece as Canisius split its Sunday double header to win the series against George Washington in collegiate baseball action from Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.

The Golden Griffins moved to 5-7 on the season after winning the second game of the day, 4-2. The Revolutionaries took the first game of the double header 5-3, moving their record to 8-7 in their non-conference record. The two teams will meet for a second series this season from March 22 through 24.

Game 1:
The Griffs pitching held the Revolutionary's bats in check for the majority of the games, with starting pitcher Justin Guiliano tossing a 6.0 inning gem. Over that period, the redshirt junior struck out five batters while allowing just three hits and one earned run.

Dick got the scoring started for the Blue and Gold in the fourth inning, sending a solo shot over the fence for his third home run of the year to put the Griffs up 1-0. The Revs answered in the bottom half of the fourth as Tim Nicholson grounded out to drive in Jude Clough for the tying run.

The Griffs broke the deadlock once again in the following inning, with DeStefano hitting a solo homer of his own to make the score 2-1 after five innings. Canisius would tack on one more run in the seventh off a Trent Rumley single that brought around junior Howie Stuckey and make it 3-1.

Junior Ethan Hennessy came on in relief to get the Griffs out of a no-out bases loaded jam in the seventh, inducing a 1-2-3 double play and fly out to leave the score at 3-1. A hero in his first inning, Hennessy would be saddled with the loss in his second inning of work, giving up four runs (two earned) as the George Washington bats caught fire in the eighth. The Griffs were unable to reach base in the ninth and took the 5-3 loss.

DeStefano went 3-for-5 with an RBI and stolen base under his belt, while junior Jackson Strong went 0-for-2 but reached on two walks and stole his 10th base of the year.

George Washington would secure seven hits and three runs batted in On the mound, Graham Jeffries would toss 4.1 innings for the Revs, allowing four Canisius hits. Earning the save for George Washington was Brandon Siegenthaler, who struck out two Griffs in the final inning to hold the lead.

Game 2:
The Revolutionaries struck first in the second game, getting a run on the board in the second off an RBI single from Bryan Belo.

Canisius would even the score in the fifth as Stuckey reached base on a single and was batted around to third by a DeStefano double. Strong drove in the run with a groundout to the second baseman, putting the score at 1-all.

Robbie Lavely put the Revs back in front with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. Dick responded with his second home run of the double header, once again tying the ballgame. The home run gave the Griffs momentum as sophomore Thomas Zwirecki and junior Cole Sebastian drew a pair of walks. Zwirecki reached third on a throwing error and scored on a Andrew Marcello sac fly to extend the lead to 3-2 as the Griffs headed to the seventh inning.

DeStefano added an exclamation mark in the ninth, hitting his second home run of the double header, extending the lead out to 4-2 in the final frame.

The Griffs second game starter, sophomore Felix Morin, gave up ten hits in his six innings of work but only allowed two runs, stranding seven runners on the base paths. He struck out six to claim his team-leading third win of the season. Junior Aaron Duffy came on in the seventh and pitched a perfect 2.1 innings, striking out two batters. Graduate Tom Peltier wrapped up the game, entering with one out in the ninth and retiring the remaining two batters to get the save and 4-2 victory for the Griffs.
