Baseball Blanks Liberty in Opening Game

Junior Peyton Consigli and Graduate Tom Peltier combined for a three-hit shutout, powering Canisius to an 4-0 victory over Liberty in collegiate baseball action at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, Va.

Consigli allowed just four of the 21 batters he faced to reach base safely while hurling six shutout innings. The Fonthill, Ontario native allowed one hit and three walks while striking out six batters.

Peltier earned the three-inning save, fanning three batters and allowing only two walks to complete the series opening win for the Golden Griffins (6-7).

Offensively, junior Cole Sebastian got the scoring started in the top half of the second, sending a towering solo shot over the left field fence.

The Griffs tacked on another run in the third as senior Carlin Dick notched a single into right field and advanced to third on a Trent Rumley ground ball that was mishandled on the infield. Junior Jackson Strong drove Dick in with a line-drive single into right field.

Strong was the only Canisius batter with multiple hits this afternoon, adding two RBI singles and double to his impressive 2024 campaign. He is batting .440 in 13 starts this season while slugging .700 with an on-base percentage of .541.

Liberty starter Cole Hertzler made a quality 7.0 inning performance but received no run support in his losing effort.

In the sixth, Strong reached on a double in the left center gap, and was immediately driven in by an opposite field double from redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki to put the game at 3-0.

To punctuate the afternoon performance from the Griffs, Rumley hit a sun-aided triple in the eighth inning, and was brought in by another single from Strong. The Flames put two runners on in the bottom half of the ninth but could not generate a comeback and Canisius took the 4-0 win.

The Griffs were also aided by multiple impressive defensive plays. In the fourth, Graduate Kenny Dodson doubled up an advancing Liberty runner, gunning him down at second from left field on a fly out. Sebastian made a diving catch in right field looking into the sun in the sixth and junior Howie Stuckey made a clutch unassisted double play in the bottom of the ninth to seal the game.
