Baseball falls to Liberty in Series Finale

A late go-ahead home run off the bat of Tanner Marsh proved to be the difference as Liberty took down Canisius, 10-9, Sunday afternoon in collegiate baseball action at Liberty Baseball Stadium in Lynchburg, Va.

Junior Jackson Strong slugged two hits including a game-tying three-run home run in the eighth inning in the setback as the Golden Griffins moved to 6-9 on the season. Liberty took the series and moved to 8-11 in their non-conference record.

The momentum between the two teams swung wildly throughout the ball games as the teams exchanged four lead changes and tied the game twice. The deciding blow off of Marsh's bat came against junior Aaron Duffy, who took the loss for the Griffs.

Canisius got on the board first with a solo home run from senior Carlin Dick in the first inning for his fifth of the season. The Flames quickly responded in the second with two RBI doubles from Garrett McClellin and Kane Kepley to take the 3-1 lead.

Griffs starter Felix Morin went five innings, allowing three runs and eight hits to the Flames.

The Griffs chipped away at the lead in the fourth as redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki reached on a hit by pitch and made it all the way around the bases on wild pitches.

In the sixth, the Griffs tied the game with a ground-rule double off the bat of junior Howie Stuckey brought home sophomore Mason Cisco.

Zwirecki came up big again in the seventh, singling up the middle to drive home Strong and Dick, who reached scoring position on a double-steal. Freshman JC Spinosa made the game 6-3 with a single that brought in Zwirecki.

Todd Hudson retook the lead in the bottom half of the seventh with a grand slam. The Flames added two more runs in that inning to make the score 9-6 going into the eighth.

Junior Trent Rumley and Dick reached base in the next inning, and were brought home by Strong's home run that tied the game at 9-all.

Marsh hit his first career home run to take the lead back in the bottom half of the eighth and Canisius was unable to respond in the ninth, taking the 10-9 loss.
