Baseball Drops Two Games in Double Header at GW

After giving up three runs in the first inning of game one, the George Washington pitching staff held Canisius to four runs across the next 17 innings to secure a double header sweep of Canisius Friday in collegiate baseball action at Tucker Field in Arlington, Va.

The Revolutionaries won 7-3 in the first game and 4-3 in the second game to move to 14-9 on their 2024 campaign. The Golden Griffins fall to 6-11 after losing the first two games of the series.

Game One:
The Griffs took an early lead in the first game of the afternoon, loading the bases in the first inning. Junior Jackson Strong drove in graduate Mike DeStefano with a ground out to second base, and redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki cleared the bases with a single to take an early 3-0 lead.

This proved to be the only offense the Griffs were able to generate in the contest as Michael Foltz allowed only three more base runners for the rest of his 6.0 inning performance. He allowed 1 hit over his remaining five innings and hit two batters en route to his third win of the season.

Andrew Cutler and Brandon Siegenthaler held the Griffs in check for the last three innings, allowing one hit and striking out four Griffs.

After Canisius took the early lead, junior Peyton Consigli held the Revolutionaries scoreless until the fourth inning. Charlie Rogan stroked an RBI double in the fourth that scored two and later scored himself on an error to tie the game at 3-all.

Robbie Lavey added an RBI single in the fifth inning and a trio of RBI singles in the sixth ballooned the George Washington lead out to 7-3. Graduate Tom Peltier came on to quiet the surge in the sixth and held the Revs scoreless through the final two innings.

Consigli was charged with the loss as the Griffs were unable to mount a comeback. Strong and DeStefano each tallied a hit in the ball game.

Game Two:
The second game of the double header began as a pitcher's duel between the two starters. Griffs starter, redshirt junior Justin Guiliano, and Teddy Brennan both went five innings while allowing one run. Guiliano struck out five and allowed four hits across his start.

The Revolutionaries scored first in the fourth as Rogan reached on a double and scored on an error to put the score at 1-0. Canisius responded in the fifth, as graduate Kenny Dodson walked and senior Ty Wevers moved him to third with a single. Freshman Eric Weeks tallied the first hit of his career to bring home Dodson and tie the game.

In the sixth, junior Aaron Duffy came on in relief and allowed a run in his first inning of work as Rogan scored on a sac fly. Duffy completed a scoreless inning in the seventh but relinquished two runs in the eighth as Nick Mullen singled with the bases loaded.

Down 3-1 in the ninth, DeStefano, senior Carlin Dick and junior Trent Rumley loaded the bases for Strong. He brought home two runners with a single that cut the lead to one run. Unfortunately, the Griffs were unable to tie the game and the game ended with a 4-3 score in favor of George Washington.

The Griffs tallied nine hits and left 12 runners stranded in a losing effort.

Game Notes:
•DeStefano stole three bases this afternoon, moving his career stolen base total to 57. He is now tied for the most career stolen bases in program history at 57. He needs one more to break Kyle Domogala's (1999-01) program record
•DeStefano also tallied his 200th career hit in the second game of the day
•Rumley reached base in both games, extending his on-base streak to 17 games. He snapped his 10-game hitting streak in the first game
•Strong extended his on-base streak to 14 games after hitting singles in both contests
•Weeks tallied his first collegiate hit and and RBI in the second game in his first career start
•The Griffs stole four bases in the second game and two in the first. The team has stolen multiple bases in 11 games this season and stolen over four bases in four games
