Baseball drops Midweek Contest to Binghamton

Binghamton scored nine runs in the final five innings while holding Canisius to three runs to erase a nine run deficit in a 11-10 comeback win Tuesday at Binghamton Baseball Complex in Vestal, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (6-13) recorded ten runs in the first five innings of the ball game, aided by a six-run second inning. The Bearcats (8-13) took big chunks out of the lead with a four-run fifth inning and an eighth inning where Canisius pitchers allowed five runs off one hit. Christian Perez hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning to complete the nine-run comeback.

Graduate Mike DeStefano led the way for the Griffs offensively, going 2-for-5 with a season high three RBI and two stolen bases. His three RBI came in the second when he hit an opposite field homer in the second. Batting third in the order, junior Cole Sebastian drove in three runs as well, highlighted by a single in the fifth inning that drove in DeStefano and junior Jackson Strong

Ryan Dee is credited with the win after throwing a scoreless top of the ninth, while redshirt junior Ethan Hennessy took the loss after allowing the walk-off hit.

Canisius took control of the game early, with senior Carlin Dick leading off the second inning with a double and scoring off a single from redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki. Sophomore Tommy Sheridan and junior Howie Stuckey both singled to score Zwirecki and were brought around by DeStefano's home run. Strong reached on a walk and was batted in by a Sebastian double to put the score 6-0 after two innings.

The Griffs added one more run in the fourth as Strong singled, stole second and was batted around by a RBI single from Dick.

Graduate Andrew Fron got the start for the Griffs, holding the Bearcats scoreless over 2.0 innings.

Binghamton responded in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run from Kevin Reilly, cutting the deficit to 7-1.

In the fifth, Sheridan scored on a balk and Sebastian tallied a single that brought home DeStefano and Strong, increasing the lead to 10-1.

Binghamton then began their comeback in the bottom half of the inning, starting with an RBI single from Perez and a three-run homer from Logan Haskell that cut the deficit in half.

In the eighth, Canisius pitching allowed six walks, allowing the Bearcats to score five runs to tie the game at 10-all.

The Griffs threatened with runners on the corners in the top of the ninth but could not capitalize allowing Perez to walk-off the Griffs in the bottom half of the inning.
