Baseball Comes Up Short Against Manhattan

Junior Trent Rumley's ninth inning two-run ground-rule double was not enough to make the comeback over Manhattan as Canisius lost 7-6 Thursday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske sports complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (6-14, 0-1 MAAC) rallied back from a four-run deficit in the ninth, bringing the game to within one run but were unable to complete the comeback. The Jaspers (8-16, 2-3 MAAC) got back into the win column, taking the first game of the Griffs' MAAC opening series.

The Jaspers were led to victory by their starter, Connor O'Reilly, who allowed one earned run over 6.1 innings while striking out four. Canisius starter, junior Peyton Consigli (1-3), took the loss after allowing two runs across 5.0 innings.

The two starters dueled for the opening innings, each going three scoreless. In the fourth, Dylan Mayer opened the scoring with a two-run homer to left field, putting the Jaspers up 2-0.

Graduate Tom Peltier came on in relief in the sixth, holding the Jaspers scoreless in his opening inning. In his second inning of work, Peltier let up an RBI single from Frankie Marinelli and 2-RBI double from Logan Pfannenbecker as the Jaspers extended their lead to 5-0.

The Griffs responded in the bottom half of the seventh, as juniors Jackson Strong and Cole Sebastian hit back-to-back home runs to cut into the deficit. Strong's home run drove in freshman JC Spinosa who led-off with a double to left field.

Now leading 5-3 in the eighth, Vincent Davis hit a solo home run for the Jaspers and Daniel Perez hit an RBI single to increase the lead to 7-3 as the teams entered the ninth.

Junior Bryan Aduddle struck out two batters to hold the Jaspers scoreless in the ninth.

Spinosa led-off the bottom of the ninth with a single, followed by three walks that brought him all the way around to score. Rumley's ground-rule double came with the bases loaded and scored Sebastian and graduate Mike DeStefano to put the score at 7-6 with two outs. The ground-rule double proved to be a blessing for the Jaspers as senior Carlin Dick was unable to score from first on the hit, and Greg Shaw closed the game out with a strikeout.
