Baseball Sweeps Siena in Walk-off Fashion

Freshman JC Spinosa walked-off the final game of a Saturday doubleheader, making a mad dash to home plate on a wild pitch to secure the series sweep of Siena at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins (11-18, 5-4 MAAC) completed their first series sweep of the season and moved above .500 record in MAAC play after winning both games of the Saturday doubleheader. The Saints fell 5-26 and 3-6 in conference play.

Game 1:
Redshirt junior Justin Guiliano dominated in his start on the mound for the Griffs, throwing seven scoreless innings while punching out a career high 11 batters. Over his seven innings of work, he only allowed two hits and issued two walks.

The Griffs took control of the game early as junior Jackson Strong belted a solo homer to dead center for the second game in-a-row. In the second, Spinosa drove in a run with an RBI single to put the Griffs up 2-0.

Guiliano held the Siena bats in check, striking out five of the first six batters he faced. Overall, Guiliano let no more than two runners reach base at a time during his start.

Canisius continued to put up runs with Strong hitting his second home run of the ball game, followed by a three-run jack from junior Trent Rumley in the third inning. Up 6-0, the Griffs added some insurance in the fifth and sixth innings with senior Carlin Dick hitting his second home run of the series and junior Howie Stuckey hitting a solo homer to extend the lead to 9-0.

The Saints made a late rally in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring six runs to cut the deficit to three but were unable to complete the comeback leaving the Griffs with a 9-6 victory in the first game of the day.

Game 2:
The second game of the day was a back-and-forth affair as both teams traded blows until the final pitch of the game. Sophomore Felix Morin was solid in his start for the Griffs, striking out six batters through 5.0 innings while allowing three runs and four hits.

The Griffs took an early lead in the first after a Rumley fielder's choice with the bases loaded brought home Strong. The Saints answered in turn as Nick Bergamotto homered to tie the game at 1-all.

In the second, the Griffs loaded the bases once again and scored on Dick base on balls. This was followed by an RBI single from Rumley that scored Strong and redshirt junior Josh Niles. Niles had a successful day at the plate, going 5-for-7 between the two games with two doubles.

A sacrifice fly from graduate Kenny Dodson in the fourth put the Griffs up 5-1 before the Saints began to chip away at the lead. An RBI double in the fourth from Kobe Stenson put the Saints within two runs. Dick added a sac fly in the fifth before the Saint put up three unanswered runs to tie the game 6-6 by the top of the ninth.

Spinosa was the hero for the Griffs in the bottom of the ninth, reaching on a double down the left field line. He reached third on a passed ball and scored soon after on a wild pitch, securing the sweep and 7-6 victory for the Griffs.
