Baseball Drops First Game of Series to Quinnipiac

Gabe Wright's three-run double in the seventh inning put Quinnipiac in pole position to secure a 7-2 victory over Canisius Friday in collegiate baseball action at Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.

The Bobcats take the first game of the series, bringing their record to 12-21 and 4-6 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins fall to 11-19 on the season and 5-5 in conference play.

The game started off at a blistering pace as both starters made quick work of the opposing lineups. Quinnipiac's Aaron Zenus held Canisius scoreless through the first three innings while allowing one hit while junior Peyton Consigli allowed two runs to score but fanned six batters through 6.0 innings of work.

Sam Favieri is credited with the win after finishing the final 6.0 innings for Quinnipiac, allowing three runs on four hits and no walks.

The Bobcats got the scoring started in the fifth, scoring two runs on wild pitches. The Griffs responded in the following inning as freshman JC Spinosa scored on a groundout by redshirt junior Josh Niles. Senior Carlin Dick doubled into the left center gap to score graduate Kenny Dodson, tying the game at 2-all in the sixth.

Quinnipiac broke the game open in the seventh inning, plating five runs. The surge was punctuated by Wright's double with the bases loaded, putting the Bobcats up 8-2 with two innings remaining.

The Griffs looked to rally in the eighth as junior Jackson Strong doubled to score Dodson but came up short. The Bobcats added another run in the bottom half of the eighth, rendering a final score of 8-3.
