Baseball Defeated in Second Game at Quinnipiac

Home runs from Gabe Wright and Jared Zimbardo propelled Quinnipiac to a 6-1 victory over Canisius Saturday in collegiate baseball action at Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.

The Bobcats took the regular season series with the win, moving to 13-21 on the season and 5-6 in conference play, overtaking Canisius in the MAAC standings. The Golden Griffins fell to fifth place in the conference standings with a 5-6 MAAC record and 11-20 overall.

Offensively, the Griffs were limited to four hits and one RBI in the contest. The lone Canisius run came in the first at-bat of the game as graduate Kenny Dodson roped a solo home run over the fence to give Canisius an early lead.

Quinnipiac bounced back in the bottom half of the first as Wright tied the game with a solo home run. Mason Ulsh earned the win for the Bobcats, who after allowing the opening home run thoroughly stifled the Canisius bats. He struck out 10 batters over 7.0 innings pitched.

Redshirt junior Justin Guiliano took the loss despite a quality start on the mound for the Griffs, going 4.1 innings while allowing two runs, six hits and striking out six batters.

Both teams were held at 1-all until the fifth inning when the Bobcats were able to break the deadlock with an RBI single from Christopher Willis. In the seventh, Quinnipiac loaded the bases and scored three runs on walks and hit batters to bring the score to 5-1.

The Griffs threatened in the eighth inning as junior Jackson Strong reached on a hit by pitch and stole second and third base. Senior Carlin Dick drew a walk and stole second to put two runners in scoring position but Canisius was unable to capitalize.

Zimbardo homered in the subsequent frame and left the final score at 6-1.

Game Notes:
•Dodson, Dick, junior Trent Rumley, and junior Howie Stuckey all tallied hits
•Despite snapping his 16 game hitting streak, Strong continued his on-base streak. He now has reached base in the 28 straight games
•Strong's 16 game hitting streak is the most for a Canisius player since 2018 when Liam Wilson had a hit in 18 straight games from 3/18/18 - 4/15/18
•Dick reached base for his 17th consecutive game
•Dodson's home run was his second of the season and third of his career
