Freshman Heroics Lead Baseball to Victory Over Marist

Freshman Michael Kelly and JC Spinosa each hit crucial home runs and accounted for five RBI to lead Canisius to a thrilling 7-6 victory over Marist Saturday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins even the series at one game apiece and move to 6-8 in the MAAC and 12-23 overall. Marist slides to 8-9 in conference play and 15-26 season record

Post Game Comments from JC Spinosa and Head Coach Matt Mazurek

The Griffs starting pitching was solid yet again as redshirt junior Justin Guiliano carried the team through 6.0 innings while allowing three hits and two runs. Guiliano was left with a no decision after Marist tied the game in the seventh. Over his last three starts, Guiliano has been excellent, holding a 2.04 ERA over 17.2 innings pitched and striking out 23 batters.

Besides Spinosa and Kelly's big day, sophomore Andrew Marcello got the start in right field and took advantage of his opportunity. He went 3-for-4 with a double and two crucial RBI in the eighth inning.

Spinosa went 2-for-3 at the plate with both of his hits going for extra bases. He laced a double down the line in the third inning and smashed a go-ahead three-run shot in the sixth for his first of the season.

Both teams were left scoreless after three innings as both starters worked their way out of jams with runners in scoring position. The scoring started in the fourth inning as sophomore Tommy Sheridan hit a double off the left field fence and was driven in by a towering homer to dead center off the bat of Kelly.

Marist chipped away at the lead as Justin Kapuscinski doubled to drive in a run. They tied the ball game at 2-all in the seventh with a squeeze bunt from Danny Moshier found a crack within the Canisius defense.

Freshman Joe Lopinto was called upon in relief in the seventh to get out of a jam with two runners on base. He was able to get out of the jam with minimal damage and was awarded the win after pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

The Griffs retaliated immediately as Marcello singled and freshman Tyson Kaufman walked in the bottom half of the inning. They were driven in by Spinosa's home run to left field that put the Griffs in the lead, 5-2.

Marcello added some insurance in the eighth with a 2-run single that drove in senior Carlin Dick and redshirt freshman Drew Podlas to give the Griffs a five run cushion.

The Red Foxes battled back in the ninth inning scoring three quick runs to cut the deficit to two runs. Freshman Andrew Malec was called upon to put out the fire in relief and was able to secure the final two outs to earn the save and get the 7-6 victory.
