Base Running Prevails in Baseball’s Win over Marist

Canisius stole eight bases including two each from Senior Carlin Dick and sophomore Andrew Marcello as they defeated Marist, 7-4, Sunday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins move to 7-8 in MAAC play after winning the home series against the Red Foxes jumping to fifth place in the standings. Marist falls to seventh place in the MAAC with a 8-10 conference record.

Post Game Comments from senior Carlin Dick and head coach Matt Mazurek

In rainy conditions, the Griffs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. After loading the bases, Marcello hit a high pop-up that got lost in the cloudy sky and fell behind the Marist second baseman, allowing both graduate Kenny Dodson and Dick to score.

Canisius starting pitcher, sophomore Felix Morin, kept up with his Friday and Saturday counterparts, pitching 6.0 solid innings while allowing four runs. The Red Foxes out hit the Griffs with 10 hits to Canisius' four but Morin was able to limit the damage and leave six runners stranded.

The Griffs tacked on two more runs in the second inning as junior Howie Stuckey reached base on a single and reached third on a JC Spinosa sac bunt and stolen base. He scored on a wild pitch before sophomore Tommy Sheridan hit an RBI single that brought home Dick. Freshman Michael Kelly added a sacrifice fly to score junior Jackson Strong, putting the Griffs up 5-0.

Marist fought back in the third with a Justin Kapuscinski two-run home run and brought the game within one run in the fourth inning after a squeeze bunt from Danny Moshier scored Colin Mackle and Dylan Millman scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth, Canisius executed some crucial two-out hitting as Marcello single and stole second and was driven in by a single from junior Trent Rumley to put the Griffs up 6-4.

Base stealing was once again pivotal in the bottom of the seventh for Canisius. Dick led the inning with a ground-rule double and stole third, allowing redshirt freshman Thomas Zwirecki to drive him in with a sac fly.

Up 7-4, Canisius called upon redshirt junior Ethan Hennessy to hold the lead. Hennessy pitched 2.2 hitless innings of relief. In the ninth he retired the first two batters but walked the next two. This allowed senior Clifton Genge to take the mound and earn the save after inducing a fly out to win the game.

Game Notes:
•After eighth steals, the Griffs have reached 100 stolen bases on the season. They are seven stolen bases away from the team single-season record of 107, set by the 2013 Griffs team
•Canisius has stolen five or more bases in six different games this season. They are 3-3 in those games
•Genge earned the first save of his Canisius career
•Dodson continued his hitting streak and on-base streak, reaching safely in 11 games and getting a hit in eight straight games
•Marcello led the team offensively this weekend. The sophomore hit .625 with four RBI and three runs scored
