Baseball Evens Up Series at Fairfield

Graduate Mike DeStefano and junior Cole Sebastian both tallied two RBIs that capped off a six run second inning as Canisius took a 8-4 victory over Fairfield Saturday in collegiate baseball action at Cook Field in Fairfield, Conn.

The Golden Griffins (8-16, 2-3 MAAC) returned to the win column with today's victory and handed Fairfield their first conference loss of the season. The Stags moved to 11-16 on the season and 4-1 in the MAAC.

The Griffs offense was humming in today's contest, tallying 12 hits, three doubles and stealing a season-high nine bases. Freshman JC Spinosa, sophomore Tommy Sheridan and senior Carlin Dick all racked up multiple hit performances.

The scoring started early for the Griffs, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second, ignited by a double from Sheridan that moved junior Trent Rumley to third base. Rumley scored on a wild pitch and Sheridan was brought around by a single from Spinosa. Sebastian kept the momentum with an RBI single and was followed by a single from DeStefano that brought home Sebastian and junior Jackson Strong

Canisius starter, redshirt junior Justin Guiliano (1-2), picked up his first win of the season after going five solid innings while striking out a season-high seven batters. He allowed four runs (two earned) off of seven hits but was able to mitigate the damage by leaving seven runners stranded.

The Stags responded in the third inning, scoring one run off a double from Dean Ferrara. The Griffs negated this run the following inning as Dick reached on a single and promptly stole both second and third base. This put him in position to score on a ground out from Sebastian, bringing the score to 7-1 in the fourth.

Sophomore Andrew Marcello individually manufactured the Griffs final run of the game, reaching second on a double and causing a throwing error as he attempted to steal third base that allowed him to score.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Stags were able to capitalize on Canisius fielding errors to cut the lead to 8-4 before the final frames of the ballgame.

Chris DiFiore came on in relief for Fairfield starter Bowen Baker who took the loss after giving up seven runs. DiFiore held the Canisius bats in check for the remainder of the game, allowing one unearned run over the final five innings.

The Canisius relievers also held the Stags scoreless as freshman Joe Lopinto and redshirt junior Ethan Hennessy combined for four scoreless innings to close the game with the score set at 8-4.

Game Notes:
•All nine Canisius batters tallied a hit in today's game
•The nine stolen bases today marked a season high and the most stolen bases by the team since last season's game at St. Bonaventure (4/11/23) when the Griffs also racked up nine stolen bases
•Strong extended his on-base streak to 21 games and his hitting streak to 10 games after hitting a triple in the eighth inning. His career high is 24 games
Carlin Dick increased his on-base streak to 10 games while Spinosa is now riding a six game on-base streak
•The Griffs hit three doubles in a game for the fourth time this season. Tommy Sheridan accounted for two of the doubles
