Baseball Stumbles in Series Finale at Fairfield

Fairfield starting pitcher Colin McVeigh struck out 14 batters over 8.0 innings while allowing one hit to secure a 7-1 victory over Canisius Sunday in collegiate baseball action at Cook Field in Fairfield, Conn.

The Stags collect the series victory and move to 12-16 overall on the season and 5-1 in MAAC play. The Golden Griffins' record slides to 8-17 with a 2-4 record in conference.

McVeigh had a historic performance against the Griffs, striking a career high 14 batters and marking the fourth highest single-game strikeout total for a Fairfield starter in program history. The Griffs registered two hits off the Fairfield pitching staff, both coming off the bat of junior Jackson Strong.

Sophomore starting pitcher Felix Morin is saddled with loss after allowing four runs in the fourth inning. Morin kept pace with McVeigh in the early innings, not allowing a base runner until the third inning. Luke Namora took the early lead for the Stags, scoring on a sac fly after reaching third on a triple in the third.

The Stags were able to jump out to a big lead in the fourth as a series of Canisius fielding errors and hits allowed four runs to cross the plate.

Leading 5-0 in the fifth inning, Fairfield's Matt Bucciero singled through the right side to add another run to the lead. Matt Lussier added a solo home run in the sixth inning to bring Fairfield up to 7-0 entering the final frames.

Freshman Thomas Russo and junior Bryan Aduddle quieted the Fairfield bats, closing out the game for the Griffs with two scoreless innings.

The Griffs lone run came in the seventh with Strong reaching on a single to right field and stealing second. He was brought around by groundouts from junior Cole Sebastian and graduate Mike DeStefano.

The Griffs threatened again in the ninth as senior Carlin Dick drew a walk and advanced to third on Strong's second hit of the ball game. Strong stole second again to put two runners in scoring position but the Griffs could not capitalize and took the 7-1 loss.

Game Notes:
•Strong's two stolen bases in today's game marked his conference leading 21 swiped bags this season. He needs four more stolen bases to break the Canisius single season record of 24, set by Kyle Domogala in 2001
•Strong increased his on-base streak to 22 games and his hitting streak to 11 games. His career high on-base streak is 26 games
•The Griffs have stolen multiple bases in 10 of their last 11 games
•The season low two hits by the Griffs is the lowest since April 16, 2023 in a 2-1 loss at Rider
•The Griffs are 2-8 this season when ten or more batters strike out
