Baseball Falls in Midweek Contest to St. Bonaventure

The St. Bonaventure offense exploded for 10-run seventh inning to surge past Canisius in a 15-9 victory Tuesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Bonnies claim their first win over Canisius since May 5, 2016 and improve to 10-17 on the season while the Golden Griffins fall to 8-18 after the loss. The two programs will complete their home-and-home non-conference series on April 23 in Olean, N.Y.

The Griffs were highlighted offensively by junior Jackson Strong who went 2-for-3 while drawing two walks, stealing three bases, driving in two runners and scoring three runs. Freshman Michael Kelly tallied a career-high four RBI's off a towering grand slam in the first inning that put the Griffs in the lead. Graduate Kenny Dodson also hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot that put the Griffs up 9-4 in the sixth.

Andrew Ayers earned the win for the Bonnies by throwing 3.2 scoreless innings to end the game while allowing two hits and striking out six batters.

The Bonnies took an early lead in the first inning as Jack Putney hit a two-run homer. The Griffs would answer right back in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases for Kelly who crushed a grand slam over the right field fence.

Senior Carlin Dick tacked on another run in the third inning, sending a sac fly to the warning track to score Strong. The Bonnies cut the lead down to one run by sixth inning after a sac fly in the fourth and fielding error by Canisius in the fifth.

Strong and Dodson teamed up in the sixth to put the Griffs back in the driver's seat, hitting back-to-back two-run extra base hits, putting Canisius up 9-4.

Jackson DeJohn added a solo home run in the seventh before Canisius' lead was unraveled. The Bonnies hung 10 runs on the Griffs pitching staff in the eighth, brought about by costly walks and errors. The Griffs were unable to recover from the knockout blow by the Bonnies and fell 15-9.

Game Notes:
•The Bonnies beat the Griffs at home for the first time since March 24, 2010

•Kelly's grand slam marked the first home run and RBI of his collegiate career
•Dodson's home run was his first of the season and the second of his career
