Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong’s Record Breaking Day Leads Baseball to Victory over Siena

Junior Jackson Strong broke the Canisius single-season record for stolen bases with his sixth multi-steal game of the season along with his 14th multi-hit game of the season as Canisius slugged their way to a 18-10 victory over Siena Friday in collegiate baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins (9-18, 3-4 MAAC) were triumphant in an offensive battle that recorded 29 total hits, 28 runs and nine home runs between the two teams. The Saints move to 5-24 on the season and 3-4 in conference play after losing game one of the three-game series.

Strong was the stand out for the Griffs offensively, reaching base five times with two hits, three walks and three runs scored including a first inning solo home run. His two stolen bases in the ball game moved him past Kyle Domogala (1999-01) as the Canisius single-season record holder in stolen bases with 26 on the season.

In total, seven Canisius players recorded two RBI on the day, four players scored three runs and every batter in the line-up recorded a hit. Sophomore Tommy Sheridan went 3-for-4 on the day, driving in three runs, scoring three runs and hitting his third home run of the season.

The Griffs hit a season high four home runs, with senior Carlin Dick, junior Trent Rumley, Sheridan and Strong all going deep.

Graduate Tom Peltier earned the win for the Griffs, allowing four runs in the final five frames to hold the Saints at bay.

Strong took the lead early for the Griffs with his solo shot in the first inning. The Saints responded with a three-run second inning highlighted by Tyler Figueroa home run. The Saints hit five homers in the game, with Figueroa and Danny Barbero accounting for two each.

Freshman JC Spinosa tied the game at 3-all in the bottom half of the second with a two-run single. Figueroa and Luke Ulbert hit home runs in the third and fourth innings respectively to jump out to a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Graduate Kenny Dodson brought the Griffs within one run in the fourth with a two-run double down the left field line. He was followed by redshirt junior Josh Niles who hit a mishandled ground ball that allowed the Griffs to take the lead as two runs crossed home.

The Saints tied the ball game at 7-7 in the fifth before Sheridan crushed a two-run homer to put the Griffs back in front. Rumley followed his lead in the sixth inning with a two-run homer of his own.

Up 11-9 in the seventh, the Griffs offense scored seven runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding 18-9 lead. Freshman Michael Kelly, junior Howie Stuckey and Niles all hit two-run doubles in the inning, with Dick punctuating the inning with a two-run home run.

The Saints tallied one more run in the eighth but could not rally after the knockout blow from the Griffs, who won the game 18-10.
