Baseball Finishes Strong to Beat George Washington

Canisius put up three runs in the eighth after holding George Washington batters scoreless in the final seven frames to ensure a comeback 5-2 victory in collegiate baseball action Friday afternoon at Tucker Field in Arlington, Va.

Junior Peyton Consigli went for a career high 6.0 innings pitched, allowing two runs and two hits, and permitting only two base-runners after the second inning. Tom Peltier got the win for the Golden Griffins (4-6), taking control of the final three innings with three strikeouts and his second straight scoreless relief appearance.

Sophomore Thomas Zwirecki had a career day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and improving his average to .391 in five starts this season. Jackson Strong also stayed hot, belting his third home run of the season and scoring two runs for the Griffs.

Consigli struggled in the first two frames, allowing Sam Gates to reach base on a hit by pitch in the first. Gates eventually scored on a delayed double steal. In the second, the Revolutionaries loaded the bases but Consigli induced a double play and fly out to limit the damage to only one run scored, leaving the score at 2-0.

The Griffs responded in the fourth, with Strong and Trent Rumley getting on base with back-to-back singles. Zwirecki brought in Strong with a single of his own to cut the lead in half.

Mike DeStefano tied the ballgame 2-2 in the following inning, sending a line drive into the left-center gap to bring in freshman JC Spinosa.

George Washington starter Michael Foltz limited the Griffs to two runs through 7.0 innings pitched. In the eighth, Benny Wilson was sent in to relieve Foltz and allowed the Griffs to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Strong got it started with his homer, followed by a Zwirecki single that drove in Carlin Dick and Rumley.

Peltier locked down the George Washington bats in the ninth and held the score at 5-2, allowing only two base-runners in the final three frames.
