Baseball Drops Series Opener to Fairfield

The Fairfield pitching tandem Blake Helmstetter and Peter Ostensen held Canisius to five hits and one run, earning the 4-1 victory Friday in collegiate baseball action at Don '63 and Chris '88 Cook Field in Fairfield, Conn.

The Stags (11-15, 4-0 MAAC) established an early lead with help from a three RBI performance from Matt Lussier and remained undefeated in MAAC play to start the conference schedule. The Golden Griffins drop the first game of the series and move to 7-16 on the season and 1-3 in conference play.

Junior Peyton Consigli (1-4) got the start for the Griffs and kept the top of the Stags lineup quiet in the early innings, striking out five in his 4.0 innings of work. The bottom half of the lineup gave Consigli trouble as Lussier hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give the Stags an early lead.

Fairfield tacked on two more runs in the fourth as Matt Bucciero roped a triple down the right field line and scored on a Lussier sac fly.

This proved to be the only runs for Fairfield as graduate Tom Peltier came on in relief and pitched 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out five.

The Griffs bats were able to get base runners with Carlin Dick, Trent Rumley, Jackson Strong and Mike DeStefano all tallying hits, but left 13 runners stranded on the base paths. Freshman JC Spinosa was the only Griff with multiple hits and scored the only run of the game in the ninth.

Canisius made an attempt at a ninth inning rally as Spinosa beat out a ground ball to third base and reached third on a single from Dick. Strong drove in Spinosa to cut the lead to 4-1, leaving two runners on base with no outs in the ninth. Ostensen got out of the jam with two strikeouts and a ground out to earn the three inning save.

Game Notes
•Peltier made his 62nd career appearance in today's game, tying Marc Muoio (1996-99) for 10th all-time in pitching appearances
