  • Played both football and baseball at Canisius, earning seven combined letters, with four on the gridiron and three on the diamond.
  • He enrolled at Canisius after serving in World War II, and played in every varsity football game from 1946-49.
  • Led his team to three consecutive Little Three titles and a 1948 Great Lakes Bowl appearance, the school's only bowl game.
  • Earned Second Team All-Little Three honors in 1947 and First Team accolades in 1948 after averaging 6.5 yards per carry that season.
  • Led the team in scoring in 1949 and registered four TDs in a 28-26 upset win over Youngstown College.
  • In baseball, Austin pitched and played outfield and posted a .400 career batting average.
  • Played pro baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization and was a member of the first induction class to the WNY Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 33rd member of the football program inducted in the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame.
