• Played football as a freshman and for three more years at the varsity level
• He was also a fine oarsmen and a member of many West Side Rowing Club's excellent crews
• Returned to his alma mater in 1948 to coach the Freshman football team
• As an undergraduate, he rowed for the West Side Rowing Club, and after graduating, served as director of the club
